Kleist: A German romantic writer in the early 19th century who shot himself, at age 34, with a close female friend (maybe a lover, biographers dispute) who was terminally ill.

The Earthquake in Chile (1807) - a brutal tale of love and catastrophe set during the 1647 earthquake in Santiago.

The Marriage in Santo Domingo (1811) - a violent story set during the Haitian Revolution, rife with betrayal and doomed love.
